Managing Urban Commons
Communities using public spaces, urban land, and infrastructure to supply goods and services important for the sustainability of the population - especially vulnerable communities - are managing urban commons.
What are some key problems that this process can solve?
Managing urban commons has been utilized in cities to try to solve issues such as urban housing and urban inequality. It is a way to "secure affordable access to resources, a measure to build community resilience, and a rallying cry against the waves of privatization and financialization that continue apace."
How does this process work?
Managing the urban commons is often a collaborative project that involves partnerships between local communities, government, businesses, academic, and/or local nonprofit organizations. Each city or project will have a slightly different approach. Some examples of urban commons include: community gardens, park conservancies, neighborhood watch groups, and business improvement districts. These commons will be governed collectively as common pool resources inspired by the work of Elinor Ostrom.
