Why create a Future
of Governance Toolkit?
All over the world, visionary communities are experimenting with novel forms of governance emphasizing the values of inclusion, plurality, and justice. They build their collective intelligence by inviting more participation from more members of their community.
These instances can provide inspiration for both existing and emerging governance structures; however, they have never been compiled into a single repository or library.
The reState team seeks
to bring these examples together
in our

We center our Future of Governance Toolkit around Use Cases.
For us, Use Cases
are a
specific formula:
Use Case =
a participatory governance process
to solve a problem by a community
using a tool
to solve a problem by a community
using a tool
For example:
a participatory budgeting process to
allocate capital funds by the youth of
Boston
The town of Bellpuig, Catalonia using the Aragon Vocdoni platform for a referendum
Participatory mapping using Mapeo by
Indigenous peoples to address
and grabbing resource exploitation
A few important points to note:
- The order of these elements can be arranged in any sequence
- Some Use Cases do not have specific tools
- Certain Use Cases tackle deeply ingrained systemic issues where explicitly naming the problem might not provide complete satisfaction
- We have rated these Use Cases on the level of participation, based on the IAP2 Spectrum by the International Association for Public Participation. We invite you to share your questions, reflections, knowledge, or opinions on how we organize this Toolkit in the 'Community Voice' boxes at the bottom of each entry.
