Participatory Democracy

Participatory democracy is a form of government in which citizens directly participate in the political decisions and policies that affect their lives.

What are some key problems that this process can solve?

Democracies around the world are under pressure from dwindling trust by their citizens, unstable economic systems, a global pandemic, and more. Introducing participatory processes into a democratic governance system can help ameliorate many problems as it provides civic spaces for citizens to come together to deliberate important issues that affect their lives and feel as though their voices actually matter.

How does this process work?

Participatory democracy is an alternative or supplement to modern, representative democracies as it provides citizens with more individual and direct power over the issues that affect them. Many different participatory governance processes make up a participatory democracy including but not limited to: participatory budgeting, citizens deliberative assemblies, referendums, and more.

What types of participation has this process offered communities?
