Peer / collaborative moderation

On web platforms with user-generated content, users take turns or fulfill certain conditions to become moderators. Usually, it is fairly easy for any user to become moderators and to contribute to creating a safe, respectful and high-quality atmosphere for the community.

What are some key problems that this process can solve?

Moderators that are not part of an online community usually lack the knowledge and an understanding of the community culture to perform their duties. Further, they might get burnt out easily in case the community is a sizable one. Distributing the responsibility of a moderator helps create a shared culture of responsibility to co-create a better community environment.
