About the Tool
The Sarafu is a local currency implemented as an open-source mobile phone feature in Kenya. The non-profit Grassroot Economics helped Kenyan communities design their own currencies - from Mombasa to Nairobi, there were first 12 different community currencies. These were later folded into a single currency named Sarafu, which is the Kiswahili word for currency.
